We're dealing with a lot of emotions as we anticipate returning to PNG after being away for 6 months, but also as we say goodbye to our very good friends, Wayne and Cheronne VanderHeide and their family. It's been an incredible blessing to be here in Cairns with them before they move back to Albany. We will miss them dearly, as will all the people at the Bible College in Port Moresby and in the churches. For 9 years, they gave all of their hearts to the work of the Lord there and we praise God for them and pray that He will give them all they need to settle back in Albany again.I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-17552450580691514542012-12-17T20:22:00.001+10:002012-12-17T20:22:29.119+10:00Tassie!Roses in bloom...wild peacocks roaming...majestic mountains...gorgeous beaches...that's some of the beauty of Tasmania. It was really wonderful to spend a week there with the VanAsperen family and the rest of our brothers and sisters in Christ in Launceston and Legana. We managed to see quite a bit of Tassie in our short time there and share about the work of the Lord in PNG to many, maybe even most, of the members in both congregations. We thank the Lord for the interest shown for the work of mission in PNG. <div>

Thank you, Gerald and Rosita and family, for being amazing hosts and for your generous hearts!<br />
We have many fond memories of our time in Tassie and we thank the Lord for the opportunity to visit. </div>
I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-79800490326981566012012-12-11T11:07:00.000+10:002012-12-11T11:07:05.721+10:00Memories of WA!<span style="font-size: large;">6 </span>weeks in Western Australia...a fantastic time filled with many different experiences, enriched by many wonderful people! <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was also a busy time. Ian had the honour of preaching every Sunday in <span style="font-size: large;">9 </span>different churches; he took part in the <span style="font-size: large;">1st</span>, but hopefully not the last Mission Conference; he shared what God is doing in PNG to <span style="font-size: large;">7 </span>churches and we visited <span style="font-size: large;">4 </span>different schools. We met with our Mission Board and our sending church. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sometimes it was a tiring time--parenting and homeschooling 'on the run' isn't always easy, especially with a newborn still waking up in the night! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But it was also a refreshing time as were we shown much love and hospitality--we rarely cooked for ourselves and were spoiled by many gifts! We were greatly encouraged by the support and interest for the work, and the love and care shown our family. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
God is so faithful and provides all we need! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

We are down to our last 12 hours or so in Canada before we move on again. In many ways, it's hard to believe that our time here is once again drawing to a close. What a time it's been! We're so thankful to the Lord for everything! Especially for blessing the arrival of our new son, but also for all the reconnecting with loved ones! We will miss you all!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tomorrow we fly to Honolulu, and after a couple night's rest, on to Sydney, and then eventually to Perth area where we'll spend the next 6 weeks or so. So even though it's hard to say goodbye, and the pain is definitely there, it is time for us as a family to move on and get one step closer to being home again in PNG. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With not much time left and still packing to do, here's a bunch of photos from our months in Canada--in no particular order! </div>

We leave early tomorrow morning (5am:() and fly to Port Moresby where we'll spend almost a week at the Bible College. Then it's over to Holland to see my two brothers--my youngest brother is getting married and two days later we hope to celebrate my parent's 40th wedding anniversary too! Then we'll finally move on to settle in Canada for a bit and await our little one. All the Lord willing, of course! I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-4243076423632729222012-06-13T22:01:00.002+10:002012-06-13T22:36:59.126+10:00SilasOn Monday, a few of us took Silas with some gentle pressure to our home and bathed him, cut his hair and settled him on a nice mattress under our car port. Although rather traumatic for him, as he hates water and hasn't been cleaned or had his hair cut for many years, it wasn't too long after we were finished and he began to chat with me, Nadia. He was a new man. However, it took him a few more hours to warm up to Ian and some of our national friends that had helped bathe him as he thought they were trying to hurt him. After one night with us, he became much more conversant. He told me that I shouldn't be going to Canada to have our baby, but have him or her here in Lae. He said, "you can't go, you're locals already!" It took us awhile to convince him that we were also leaving to visit family and our supporting churches. He was relaxed with us. But then we had to move him again to his new home. It turned out that his cousin wasn't willing to care for him, but our friend whom we mentioned in the last post was. He was rather unsettled again, but today we learnt that he bathed in the river close to his 'new' home and was quite conversant with the people looking after him. He is being loved and cared for there. And now we pray that he will not want to return to his former "home" under the overhang of a closed-down business. We have also encouraged our own church community to support this family in caring for Silas.<br />
<br />
Eating more regularly has helped him slowly grow stronger over the past few weeks, but he still very weak. We had to carry him from our car to his new accommodations in the settlement. Still, we're praying for the Lord to continue to heal him in every way and continue to prepare him for glory!I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-48010970830149701952012-06-02T20:25:00.000+10:002012-06-13T22:03:27.356+10:00The Man Was Dead<i><b>As those of you in Australia would have seen already, Ian wrote this article for the most recent Mission News. We've included an update about the man, whom we now know is named Silas, at the end of the article.</b></i><br />
<i><b><br /></b></i><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i><span lang="EN-CA">“The
man was dead. He was. I checked his pulse; I checked whether he was
breathing, and there was no sign of life in him. His body was still warm, but listless. Life
was gone. I covered him up with a
blanket and went to the police station nearby to get their help. They said
there was no vehicle in sight. It was
then that I called Pastor Tim and you to go pick up the body and drop it off at
the morgue.” <o:p></o:p></span></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">The man sleeps just 100 meters away from
the gate of our compound. He is sadly deranged, hates to wash himself, his hair
is a long matted dreadlock, he has one tooth, and he sleeps under a tree by day
and under a roof of an overhang by night.
His speech is mostly incoherent, except when he requests his drink of
choice: 500 ml of coke. He is barely 35
kilos and his life has ebbed away due to some unknown illness—probably TB. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">When we received the news to pick up this
man’s body and bring it to the morgue my heart sank. We have walked or driven by him countless
times. Did we do enough? The questions
erupted in my heart. Did he hear from my
lips the Gospel of God’s redeeming grace?
Did I share in so many words that
Christ came to redeem his soul, his life from eternal punishment on account of
his sins? Did he know that he was looked
upon in love by Divinity who proved that love so perfectly on the cross of <st1:place w:st="on">Calvary</st1:place>? </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">Like others I would give him some food or drink,
maybe some money, attempt to sputter out a few words of love and grace, but
rarely did I ever spend more than 30 seconds with him. Restrained by my own comfort-zone, it seems,
I did little more. Subconsciously I
rationalized that he was too deranged to hear the Gospel. But was he?
And did I think he was too deranged to feel the compassion of
Christ? There seemed to be so few who
showed him love, if any. He was our
Lazarus. And the dogs would have licked
his wounds and the rats nibbled on his toes.
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">And now he was dead. How did he die? Could he have died honourably? His condition was beyond pitiful and his own
family looked askance when they passed him each day. But what was the state of
his soul? My mind charged ahead into the
inevitable: did he or did he not enter into a Christ-less eternity? </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">You see the rumour mill has produced some
fallacious stories about this man. One
in particular is that a number of years ago he burnt his Bible in a symbolic
act of giving his life to the devil.
The Lord in turn, goes the rumour, turned his life into a living
hell. He was cursed, and wondered the
streets as a lunatic, with a long overcoat, torn and ripped trousers and an
unwashed body with lice infested hair that served as a natural repellent for
even the most compassionate of heart.
Was it true? Did he die a slave
of the devil who captured his soul and played havoc on his mind for all these
years? </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">Pastor Tim and I had to go see him. We discussed our options and realized that we
needed to find a ute to transport the body. As ours was in the garage, we found
a friend who was willing to help us out.
The plan was to meet at the body. Sorrowful, circumspect and
apprehensive we drove the 100 meters to the deceased. We parked.
We stepped out of the car. And
there we stood gazing at this small, shrunken body covered in a blanket with
coke bottles and lids strewn everywhere and soiled and dirty clothes heaped
under his head. Our hearts burned with
pain. This is not; This Is Not; THIS IS NOT how God created it to be! This is
the all-destructive power of sin! What
evil. What desperation. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA"><br />
Then he moved. His diaphragm was moving
the blanket up and down. His arms jostled
a little from under the blanket and a thin, skeletal-hand appeared slowly, even
eloquently moving the flies away that had come to gather on an exposed bed sore
on his shoulder. The man thought dead
was now breathing again. Our friend who called us and had served as the
coronary would attest unequivocally to his death. But here he was living, breathing his last
breath, maybe, but breathing nonetheless. More questions confronted us: had he really
died? Did God resuscitate him? And why? </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">We bent down to speak to him. He turned to
us. Exposing more of his body meant
seeing life within a skeleton. I took his hand. His working eye (the other had been removed,
it seemed) focused on us. A smile
creased across his face. It was a warm
exchange. With his hand in mine, we did
what we are called to do, share the Gospel.
He listened. We continued. We spoke
about the door that was opening before him.
We shared that he would pass through that door very soon. He would enter into eternity and meet
God. He needed to believe in Jesus
Christ and what He did for him; and to confess his sins and repent of them! Then he spoke. He spoke about seeing a vision of sorts, but
it was all rather unclear. He was
pointing to the sky and we heard what seemed to be the name of Jesus slip from
his lips, or maybe we just wanted him to say His name. We prayed for him. We prayed that God would do a miracle in His
heart and that this man, a tattered and broken image bearer of Him, would see Christ’s
face not as a stern Judge but a loving Saviour who came to save! We prayed.
He listened. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA"><br />
We finished and we asked him what he needed.
He said, “500 ml of coke!” That
has been his diet for many years. We
asked him if we could bring him to the hospital to get some extra help. He refused.
We chose not to force it as he would not last long in their care. We then
began to realize that he was able to understand more than we first imagined,
but unfortunately I had to go. The women
in our church had asked me to speak to them at their Bible Study and I was
already over half hour late. Pastor Tim
took the opportunity to purchase some food for him and administer more
love. But he too had to leave. Ministry seems to have a way of keeping our
feet moving to the next call. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">What has come of this gentleman? About a half a kilometre away he has a niece
who is married and is ready to help out…finally. They said they would take him there and wash
him and care for him. I’m not sure if they will. If they don’t we need to do something. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">The fact is if he has died recently, he
will die shortly again. But the
question continues to surface: what was
our Lord trying to teach us in all of this?
Was He revealing to us that He does not forget about the people we are
quick to ignore? Was he showing afresh that
he loves the Lazarus outside the gate? Was
he again reminding us that “He is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and
abounding in steadfast love” and that love should compel us to love? Was He trying to break through the walls that
define our comfort-zones? </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="EN-CA">Sometimes as missionaries we can become so
focused on making sure the truth, the doctrines of grace, the confessions are
clearly taught and understood---and this we must do---but sometimes it means we
fail to hear the cries of those who need to receive the compassion of Christ! God will not let us do this. He will not let us ignore the destitute, the
sojourner, the orphan, the widow and the beggar outside our gate! I believe I needed to be reminded of this
again. For if I am not showing unconditional
love, I am nothing more than “a noisy gong and a clanging cymbal.” The call of the Gospel it to love as God
first loved us, and that call should also never be restrained by one’s so-called
comfort zones! </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
Hopefully, there will be more to follow
about this man who died once. Maybe you
can hold this nameless, destitute man, who stands in so much need of God’s loving,
forgiving embrace, in your prayers! Pray that though he dies yet shall he
LIVE--<b>because Christ…!</b> <i> </i><br />
<i>*********************************************************************************</i><br />
<i>Since that day, we and our coworkers have continued to visit with this man named Silas, just about everyday. We've realized that he was very weak from mal-nourishment and so we have been feeding him soup and have noticed that he is slowly gaining his strength back. We do realize that our caring for him between the four of us is not a realistic long-term solution though. We soon leave on furlough and it may be difficult for Tim and Francine to keep feeding him everyday on their own. Our attempts to find one of his family members to care for him have been unsuccessful so far. The friend of ours who originally found him "dead" has said that he and his wife are willing to have him come and stay with them, and we will pursue this further, but we have many questions as we struggle with how to help this man. I</i><i>t's very difficult to know how to help someone whom we're not even sure wants to be helped. He doesn't say much when we go to feed him, although he does quickly drink down the soup. Would he even want to go and stay with our friend? Or is he content to stay sleeping under the little overhang of an abandoned business, taking food and drink if it comes, but not doing much if it doesn't?</i><i> Has he been devoid of love and attention for so long that he no longer responds to it, and doesn't care if he lives or dies? We also wonder how our friend and his family will be able to provide for him as sometimes it's difficult for them to provide for their own needs. We are also not sure of Silas' mental state--if he is unstable, will this put our friend's family at risk? This arrangement may not be a realistic long-term solution either. </i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>So many questions and not many answers yet. Please pray for us that we may know how to help Silas! And please pray for Silas, as we are not sure where he stands with the Lord. We pray that he does know Jesus Christ as His Saviour and King and Lord! </i>I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-20618301160808364802012-05-18T21:33:00.000+10:002012-05-18T21:33:19.189+10:00The Home-Schooling Journey<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Quite a few weeks ago already, an entirely new routine started around here. Our children finished Term 1 at their school and we began home-schooling. Something I said, "I would never do"! But it's amazing how that changed when the Lord worked on my heart and made <i>His </i>will clear to me. And when He is at work, the unthinkable suddenly becomes the doable! Home-schooling has been an unexpectedly amazing journey so far, but before I share more, first let me show some photos of their last few weeks at their old school.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the big reasons we decided to home-school for the rest of this year is because of our upcoming furlough, which is set to begin in about 5 weeks time! PNG has a very different school timetable than Canada, meaning that when Canadian kids are on their summer holidays, kids in PNG are doing Term 3! We realized that in order for our kids to fit back into the PNG system when we return at the end of the year, DV, then we would have to do some home-schooling and it made sense to get into a good routine before all the travelling. Much research was done along with much prayer, supplies were purchased, a program was ordered from Australia, and here we are.... </div>

<br />
Things fell into place amazingly smoothly. The biggest hurdle in this decision was the doubts and hesitancy in my own heart! Which as I said, the Lord worked on those, and gave me such peace when the decision was made! He also provided in amazing ways to take my doubts away, such as placing a book on my lap about a week before we were to start, written by another home-schooling mom, which gave me such good advice and encouragement (I highly recommend it, it's called, "A Mom Just Like You" by Vickie Farris and Jayme Farris Metzgar ). During our first week of home-schooling, providentially,Tim DeVos was visiting from Australia--a principal at a primary school there. He was here providing training for the teachers who hope to teach at the school that our church is opening later this year, but in the off-time I peppered him with my own questions and was so blessed by his expertise and knowledge. This came at exactly the right time! It is humbling when the Lord provides in such small and big ways. Makes you wonder why you doubted at all!<br />
<br />
Still, there have been struggles. The kids have missed their friends from school, although we try to see them on the weekends. There have been times when I've wanted to pull my hair out when they seem unmotivated and uninterested. And sometimes doubts still pop up...like, are they really learning anything? And, am I missing something major in their curriculum? But overall, it's been a blessing for our family and brought us even closer together. To be honest, I thought maybe I would go crazy having the kids home all day everyday, or, that I just wouldn't have the patience for it. But the opposite has been true. I enjoy having them around even more and haven't missed the quieter days, although maybe Caleb has missed having Mommy all to himself at times!<br />
<br />
So that is the beginning of our home-schooling journey. We pray that it will continue to go well. It'll probably get harder from here on in as we will make the huge transition to Canada with all of the adjustments and catching up with loved ones, while also awaiting the arrival of the new addition to the family, the Lord willing. And then we're off to Australia. Somehow school will have to continue through it all! But we know our faithful Father will provide for us in every way. About 90 people slept at our church on Saturday night (mostly women and children). Many of them returned to their homes in the settlement on Sunday, although a small group of them are still staying at the church. There has not been any further fighting, but the situation is uncertain and tense for them. It's especially difficult for them to sleep at night, not knowing if and when the fighting will begin again. Many of the men are keeping watch for as long as they can.</div><div><br /></div><div>The tribe who had their houses burnt apparently had a 25-seater busload of people from their village arrive. They are armed and ready to fight...if necessary. </div><div><br /></div><div>We continue to pray for true reconciliation and peace for the people there! What the community really needs is godly leaders who are filled with the peace and wisdom of Jesus Christ. Then they can ensure that the ongoing fighting between the tribal groups is properly addressed. Many of the residents are carrying anger, hurt and deep resentment from years past--these feelings are just below the surface and bubble over very quickly. And in many ways, it's very understandable. How hard it is to forgive and be reconciled to your neighbours when they have burned your home down; or, seriously injured your daughter by slashing her with a knife; or worse, killed your son? </div><div><br /></div><div>Only when you know the power of Christ`s forgiveness in your own life are you able to travel the difficult but blessed road of true reconciliation! </div>I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-88128894211905863472012-04-14T17:39:00.002+10:002012-04-14T17:54:29.018+10:00Biwat SettlementA couple hours ago, Jono came running into the house yelling, "Mom, mom, Biwat's on fire!". And sure enough as I ran outside and looked across the road to where the Biwat Settlement is, I could see the billows of black smoke rising up into the sky. <div><br /></div><div>There are 3 main tribal groups living in the Biwat Settlement and because of a murder, two of them have been fighting on and off the past couple weeks. Over the past 5 years or so that we've been involved in this settlement, we have definitely witnessed the people there facing much unrest and uncertainty because of similar situations. This time has been equally unsettling, and the people have not been able to even sleep soundly at night, never knowing when the fighting would begin again. And this time, the weapons were not only bushknives and sticks, but also guns. More than once, the people had to flee their homes for their safety, only to also have many belongings and food stolen while they were finding safety elsewhere. As is also very common, to take revenge houses have been set on fire. And that is what happened today. The majority of our church people come from the tribe that is not directly involved in the fighting, but they still had to flee their homes today again, not knowing how far the fires would spread. They live pretty closely together in there. </div><div><br /></div><div>Ian and Tim just went to drive a large group of them over to the church to sleep there for the night. They do not know what will happen to their homes while they are away. A very difficult situation for them. But at least they will be safe. <div><br /></div><div>Please pray for these displaced families, but also that the Lord will bring His peace---lasting peace---into the Biwat Community through the power of His Word and Spirit.</div><div><br /></div><div>Thank you, as always, for your prayers! </div></div>I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-40030217455911319992012-03-10T13:52:00.005+10:002012-03-26T20:41:42.787+10:00A Question for Fellow Bakers<span><span style="font-size: 100%; " >I recently acquired a bread machine. A friend had two and decided to give one to me! A lovely, generous gift. It's been fun experimenting with different recipes for bread, rolls, cheese twists, and pizza dough, even some with spelt flour for Ian and me (since we are both wheat-intolerant). Our kids still enjoy their sandwiches at lunch, so for them I've been searching for a true wholemeal (or wholewheat, for the Canadians:)) bread recipe. Most of the recipes out there, even the one that came with the machine, call for half white flour. That's not wholemeal, is it??</span></span><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span ><br /></span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span >So I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who has found a good recipe that is 100% wholewheat, or at least as close as we can get?</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span >**********************************************************************************</span></div><div style="font-size: 100%; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; "><span ><span style="font-style: normal; ">Thank you again to those who sent me recipes and tips. And we understand why--as a young man living in the settlements of Lae, it's not easy to stand up for your faith. As is the case worldwide, there's pressure to fit in, to join the partying, to live for yourself instead of living for the Lord. But at the College, they are away from these pressures and have the opportunity to delve into the Word everyday with other young Christians. Of course, college life has its challenges too, but we thank God that these young men have the opportunity to be there to strengthen and increase their faith and knowledge of Christ and His Word. <i>Please pray for them, and also the other young men, their friends and brothers, </i><i>that stayed behind in the settlements. </i></span></span><br /><span style="font-family: Georgia, serif; text-align: center; "><br /></span></div><div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: center; "><span>This is Annie and Jerry, with their daughters, Christina and baby Agnes. They were a blessing to our church community as he preached, and together they lead a Marriage Course, Youth Bible Studies, and supported the church members. We feel we have a pretty good excuse, though. We were busy having a holiday in Cairns, Australia! Cairns is not far from PNG--only a 1.5 hour flight from Port Moresby--and it is a beautiful place to visit! For us, it was made even more beautiful by the church group there. Ian was privileged to preach a couple of times and we all enjoyed the love and hospitality shown us by the members. They made us feel welcome, had us over for dinner, babysat our children, showed us some spectacular sights, and so on!<div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here we are, taking in some of the beauty of the Tablelands of Cairns. </div><div style="text-align: center;">The tree behind us is surrounded by a vine that looks like a curtain, </div><div style="text-align: center;">aptly called the curtain fig. </div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpDQCwYTm-bgX-y9HvVwwpclc3j0-9bVAIHarUFPrEWUfn_yePipXmLQQq8UXK73pLGTU3qBgdcN6VO_-T98GLqCuaZ9pOSWJCNRtFOxV_REHmXoEKAzlx0aF9DTb6e8UiGtzEOuuP9HY/s1600/January2012+065.jpg"><img style="display:block; Grace Binabe and Jennifer Samson professed their faith in Christ and then also became members of our church, and two little girls were baptized as well. It is always a joy to witness this and we pray that these women and girls will faithfully serve the Lord for the rest of their lives! The only sad part of the day was that the husbands, although they were there, did not make the same commitment. We pray for the Spirit to move them and that they will also publicly confess Christ as Lord and Saviour and commit to being faithful members of our church. <div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">This is Ian baptizing Martha as her mother and aunt stand behind her.</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii2EOMqj41zH_JbUqVPzNczY6fjiGNVE3Y_bTy2XaeJ1CQc0UP9z8KMbsqNFqkfkc-Hz1ozY_iPGlUY4MzMiyGNcqEliMqoNTIuA2swWSbYuT3GH21uwbFrw7BtJpFuVc0UFLeWIozqGE/s1600/December2011+004.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii2EOMqj41zH_JbUqVPzNczY6fjiGNVE3Y_bTy2XaeJ1CQc0UP9z8KMbsqNFqkfkc-Hz1ozY_iPGlUY4MzMiyGNcqEliMqoNTIuA2swWSbYuT3GH21uwbFrw7BtJpFuVc0UFLeWIozqGE/s320/December2011+004.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689544884462846594" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here's Grace and Jenny with the pidgin Bibles they received from the church, </div><div style="text-align: center;">and also Martha with her baptism certificate. </div><div style="text-align: center;">Her sister, Angela, was also baptized </div><div style="text-align: center;">but I wasn't able to pin her down to join the photo.</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI7kwT6hpE7_A0Jj2drsXrTxkpIE5zKqN1BiO1DQobfypYmXzWss-gcMsZqkBj26dLrF1fyTQwRIYnG3KYtOjw67AoWOH5NZA57WlF-bboZ0NNXKGAPeMc4r6BMFRMW3GkbYsmUgr5yJ0/s1600/December2011+010.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI7kwT6hpE7_A0Jj2drsXrTxkpIE5zKqN1BiO1DQobfypYmXzWss-gcMsZqkBj26dLrF1fyTQwRIYnG3KYtOjw67AoWOH5NZA57WlF-bboZ0NNXKGAPeMc4r6BMFRMW3GkbYsmUgr5yJ0/s320/December2011+010.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689544880682523490" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: left;">That same Sunday, we also officially welcomed Pastor Tim and Francine (and Avigail) into our church family. Unbelievable, isn't it? And yet somehow it does not surprise us. <div><br /></div><div>We do not know the extent of the injuries to the little one, although she is crying a lot as if in pain and had quite a high temperature today. We ask you to please pray that there will be no serious, permanent injuries from this fall.</div><div><br /></div><div>Please also pray for the parents, Jerry and Annie. About 2.5 years ago, they already lost their second child who was stillborn at birth.</div><div><br /></div><div>We cling to the promises of our Good Shepherd:</div><div>"He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young." All is ok in Lae, since it was 89 km south-west of here, although there was a lot of shaking and things falling off shelves, and we ran out of the house, just in case. We're not sure yet how those are doing who were nearer to the epi-centre. </div><div><br /></div><div>This earthquake hit also at a time of political upheaval as on Tuesday a Supreme Court decision reinstated Sir Michael Somare as Prime Minister, even though 109 MPs refused to drop their support for Peter O'Neill, who was voted in by parliament on August 2, 2011 (because Somare had been away in Singapore for many months for serious medical treatment). Somare is urging police to remain neutral and do their utmost to maintain peace, law and order. In effect, we really have two Prime Ministers right now, one supported by Parliament and the other by a Supreme Court decision. </div><div><br /></div><div>"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging...</div><div><br /></div><div>Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. </div><div><br /></div><div>The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress."</div><div><br /></div><div>Psalm 46</div>I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-69127231612298032392011-12-12T16:32:00.003+10:002011-12-12T17:26:11.990+10:00God's childrenIt really is safe to say that things are stable again here in Lae. We're thankful for that! We also hope that the tribes involved can move on and let the government deal with the larger issues of law and order. We would like to keep things moving with our blog too, and so it's time to update you on a few other things that have also been happening in our ministry and family these past few weeks. <div><br /></div><div>First of all, we'd like to share that we had a very special Sunday a few weeks ago where two of God's children were baptized. It is always beautiful to be reminded of God's promises to the children of believers and we do pray that both of these children will respond to these promises as they get older and come to confess Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord! </div><div><br /></div><div>And here they are:</div><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;">This is Martha with her son, Tobias.</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjku_K9eDknxfXrdbt3bMDtaAOOVXDrn7udQBry9CAbH30wzvkYdAJbHVU7aGLxr0RuC6eZv_qTsyBUCIEssPYRteZhitaDwAMmZAGqPC13xU-6OR1hEmwglwaGQKa2Occr0M8CZGdpLpQ/s1600/P1040049.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjku_K9eDknxfXrdbt3bMDtaAOOVXDrn7udQBry9CAbH30wzvkYdAJbHVU7aGLxr0RuC6eZv_qTsyBUCIEssPYRteZhitaDwAMmZAGqPC13xU-6OR1hEmwglwaGQKa2Occr0M8CZGdpLpQ/s320/P1040049.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685126969520104386" /></a><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">And Monica, with her daughter, Nadia (my namesake!). </div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA_bQpncm7dDt3ufNud08xjajbDK-WioQjo3b1qQcw9Ue3L0J5V9GTcV3LV2rGSX5AJJl3kKkFn_qQJawq8hlXhqG45go5I2tjQ0MZ8kDItkDKSpIqZJ7a06hniwxZEEpeKMdMoLCD01s/s1600/P1040042.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA_bQpncm7dDt3ufNud08xjajbDK-WioQjo3b1qQcw9Ue3L0J5V9GTcV3LV2rGSX5AJJl3kKkFn_qQJawq8hlXhqG45go5I2tjQ0MZ8kDItkDKSpIqZJ7a06hniwxZEEpeKMdMoLCD01s/s320/P1040042.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5685126970339383538" /></a>Our Heavenly Father's faithful love for these precious children is even more beautiful considering that their earthly fathers are not really involved in their lives right now. A sad reality, and also one that brings heartache to the mothers. Please also pray for them that they will have all they need to raise their children to know the Lord!</div><div><br /></div><div>That's all for now, please check again soon for another update. <br /><br /></div>I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-46042019893238301812011-11-20T13:09:00.005+10:002011-11-20T15:21:51.233+10:00Life Goes On, But...It's been just over 2 weeks since the unrest began in Lae and at first glance it would seem that things have basically gotten back to normal. There are no longer thousands of armed young men roaming the streets of Lae preparing for a fight! We're thankful for that, but when you look a little closer, you soon realize that the situation remains volatile and still needs much prayer. <div><br /></div><div>Our children had a full week of school, but the public schools have all remained closed. Even the hospital's services have been affected and it is only open for emergency situations. This past week, some of the businesses made the decision to evacuate their ex-pat employees to Australia. But I think the worst of it all is the rumours that continue to fly around which cause greater uncertainty and evoke fear in the hearts of many Papua New Guineans. Such as, the rumours of fights happening in different areas; of counterfeit police officers arresting people and later killing them; of doctors and nurses not properly caring for patients and letting them die if they are from the other tribal group; and of witchcraft and what they call "nature-men" who are gathering their young men together and wielding the powers of darkness against their enemies. <div><br /></div><div>The thing about rumours is that it's often difficult to discern whether they're true or not. In the case of the rumours of black magic, however, it is apparent that there is a very real spiritual battle going on here (Ephesians 6:12). Although PNG is a "Christian nation", there are many who still bend the knee to Satan and take part in traditional ancestor worship. We were not surprised then to have it confirmed that the leader of the large group of rioters who started all of this, was one of these so-called "nature-men". In what became a deadly deception, he believed he was invincible and that his black magic would protect him from the bullets of the police officers. Our neighbour is a member of the police task force and was involved in setting up the barricade to try to keep the large group from coming back into the city two weeks ago and wreaking more havoc. As the leader continued to bring the crowd past the police barricade, it became apparent that they would have to shoot him down if they wanted to get the crowd under control. And that is what they did. It is so sad that he, and so many others, could be so deceived. Still the situation could've been that much worse if the police had not succeeded. Praise and thanks be to God for using them to keep it under control. He most definitely is , our Mighty Fortress, and He <i>will</i> win the battle!</div><div><br /></div><div>And so we do ask you to keep praying, always being thankful for your faithfulness in prayer...</div><div><ul><li>for all those who have been and are still being affected by this tribal warfare (those who have lost loved ones and their homes; those still living in fear). </li><li>for those who are being deceived by the father of lies, that the TRUTH of the Gospel may illuminate the darkness in their lives. </li></ul></div></div>I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-48982315836857274902011-11-09T05:29:00.005+10:002011-11-09T09:28:26.462+10:00Getting ThereOn the morning of Day 7, it seems safe to say that things are really settling down. They did not need to declare a State of Emergency and so the army has not been sent in to restore order. Schools and businesses reopened yesterday, although probably only about half the children and employees were there. Many still stayed home out of fear, and public transportation was not fully operational yet. Hopefully, another day of peace will help to put the schools, businesses and public transport back into full swing again, albeit with tighter security. <div><br /></div><div>Yesterday, 3000 Morobeans gathered to present a letter addressed to our Prime Minister Peter O'Neill. In it they stated that they will agree to stop fighting if certain conditions are met, the most significant one being the call to maintain law and order at the major bus stops and main areas in town. And certainly this seems to be the straw that broke the camel's back and started the unrest---when the Morobeans felt they needed to take the law into their own hands to deal with the crimes being committed in these areas by, supposedly, the youth from the highlands.</div><div><br /></div><div>If any good has come out of this whole ordeal, it is that the government has been forced to take action and it certainly seems it has been negligent. One of the newspapers reported that the Morobe Provincial Law and Order Committee set up many years ago to monitor law and order trends in the city hasn't met for the last three years! Now the government has appointed an assembly law and order committee to look into ethnic tension in the city. Here's hoping they will take their task very seriously! They also stated that there will be more police presence at the major bus stops in town. </div><div><br /></div><div>Lessons have been learned, eyes have been opened, solutions to the problems will be sought, but this has all come at a great cost. The official report is that six are dead. We're sure many more have been injured. Many houses have been burnt down and a large number of innocent families have again been displaced. And possibly, the tension between the two groups is even higher. </div><div><br /></div><div>That's when you realize again the great need for prayer. We need to pray for this city -the youth, the leaders, but no less the parents and grandparents and children. For at bottom the issue is one of the heart. Theft, rape, murder, rioting, uncontrolled anger, disrespect, lying and corruption are all indicators that the heart of 'man' is desperately evil...continually. That heart needs to be purged and cleansed, atoned for by the precious blood of our Saviour, the Prince of Peace. We will soon enter the time of advent, we pray that the people of Lae will understand what that means. </div><div><br />There is one who has come to redeem, to set free, to bring peace and reconcile us to God carrying our sin and guilt and shame on the cross so that in Him and only in Him we can know true Peace! That is the kind of peace that will last forever!</div>I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5998934198613808448.post-47066506092415718782011-11-07T20:02:00.004+10:002011-11-07T21:19:46.505+10:00Day 5Thank you everyone for your support and prayers! It's amazing to know that people all over the world are praying for Lae. And your prayers are needed! We know this is more than just a physical struggle, and that there is also a very real battle going on in the spiritual world. The Prince of darkness will do what he can to keep the hatred and fighting and killing happening and to try to break up the unity within the body of Christ. He may try, but Christ will keep His flock together, and protect His own!<div><br /><div>Last night around 9:00pm, we got a frantic call from the families living on the church property saying that there was panic again in the settlement, with people running everywhere, saying that the Morobeans were coming to fight, but they weren't sure which way they were coming from. They were very afraid. Ian asked if they wanted him to come pick them up, but they didn't want to risk him coming over there either. In the end, they turned the lights off so as not to attract attention to themselves, and they prayed. After that, in the midst of the chaos, they felt the peace that passes understanding. And the Morobeans never did come. We think that the increased police presence (recruits were sent in from Port Moresby and the Highlands) held them off at the back of the settlement.</div><div> </div><div><br /></div><div>Today, was <i>almost</i> a normal day. Stores and businesses reopened; people seemingly went about their lives as they normally do. We were able to re-stock our fridge and cupboards. Jonathan and Karlyn had a fun day off of school swimming in the pool and playing with the other kids in the compound. However, there was another reality check, in a certain area outside of the city, we heard that the fighting continued and that there have been more deaths. It's difficult to know what's really happening and what are just rumours and certainly the Father of lies loves to twist the truth to put fear in the hearts of many. A friend called this morning to say that she heard from more than one source that the town water had been intentionally contaminated and that we shouldn't touch it. This put us into a bit of a tailspin, especially since I was in the middle of doing the dishes and laundry. We were very skeptical that this could occur, but then again nothing really surprises us anymore and many people were saying it was true. In the end, it wasn't, thankfully, but this just added to the stress of the whole situation.</div><div><br /></div><div>Tomorrow, school will reopen again and we hope we will be that much closer to a peaceful resolution. Please keep praying--not only that the fighting will stop, but also that God will use this to bring people to Himself!</div><div><br /></div><div>We also want to praise God for His care and protection over our coworkers, Tim and Francine Sikkema, this past weekend. As they are in the middle of cultural training, they're living in a village for 5 weeks--and are about 2 hours from town and the nearest doctor. Tim ate some grubs and had a toxic reaction to them--and even went in and out of consciousness a few times until his village papa told him to eat some charcoal. This worked quickly to help absorb the toxins in his stomach and stop the effects of the allergic reaction. It was a very frightening experience for them, and we're thankful that the Lord spared his life. And he is doing much better today! Their village papa has sent out a "decree" that no one in the village is allowed to give him anything unusual to eat--looks like it's just kaukau (sweet potato) and kumu (greens) from here on in! </div></div>I and N Wildeboerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10243669022494697471noreply@blogger.com3
